Project Details
Part of the Milton Keynes Bus Station was regenerated to provide a constructed area for street sports. This design was achieved by a careful use of a limited palette of construction materials, which complemented the existing architecture of the city. The project included new test finishes to assess their suitability for skateboard surfaces.
The works included the removal of existing surfaces, provision of skateboard areas with stainless steel edge trim, removal and replacement of stone cladding and pedestrian management. The main areas and details for skateboarding were made up of large sections of polished granite and areas of cast in-situ concrete.
Design fully encompassed the policy document Design for Play: a guide to creating successful play spaces and was featured by Play England as an exemplar project.
The Buszy won the LGC Award for Community Involvement 2006; the judges commented “The initiative was exciting and innovative, addressing a problem that is an issue for many local communities. It has succeeded in attracting the interest of young people and providing positive role models. It has delivered significant and sustained improvements for the participants and the wider local community".
